4th - 9th May

The Great Snipe in  the Chania area still present on the 5th

The Red-footed Falcons depart, in come the eagles, Eleonora's Falcon and Hobby  There are good numbers of both cuckoo and Golden Oriole around this year with many seen the end of last week continuing into this one.

Bee-eater continue to pass in small groups of up to twenty birds

Honey Buzzard on the 4th

Groups of both Great Tit and Sardinian Warbler are showing up with their first broods

Our Blackbird that had been sitting for two weeks was predated by a Balkan Whip Snake we found the next empty on the 2nd and the snake was spotted curled up under the olive tree with a distinct swelling in its stomach !!!

3rd

Kaliviani to Aradena Gorge via Giorgopouli 

Before setting off at 0800 we had at Kaliviani... Bee-eater c30, Chaffinch, Crested Lark, Cetti's Warbler, Corn Bunting, Sardinian Warbler, Woodlark, Blackbird, Great Tit, Yellow-legged Gull, Woodchat Shrike, Hooded Crow, Barn Swallow, Golden Oriole, Yellow Wagtail, Scops Owl
At Kato Stalos we picked up Ron and headed for Giorgopouli in the hope of seeing the Pygmy Cormorant, we arrived just in time, two minutes after our arrival there it flew ! other species at the viewpoint... Reed Warbler, Blackcap, Serin, Wryneck, Little Egret, Coot, Moorhen, Green Sandpiper ( seen by Ron) Swift, Alpine swift, Little Grebe, Great Tit, Italian Sparrow, Barn Swallow, Collared Dove..

Moving on to Imbros Gorge in the hope of eagles , we were in for a dissapointment. First bird seen flying throught he gorge a Little Egret, c20 Griffon Vulture, Crag Martin, Wren, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, Great Tit, Raven, Woodlark, Woodchat Shrike, Blue Rock Thrush, Greenfinch, Kestrel... Later after dropping Ron off for his hike along the E4 we also had Bee-eater, Cirl Bunting, Blackbird, Sardinian Warbler, Black-eared Wheatear. 
And so to Aradena Gorge , a calling Hoopoe, and a calling Scops Owl, Blue Rock Thrush, Turtle Dove, Black-eared Wheatear, Griffon Vulture 1. Kestrel. A very poor day for raptors not even a common Buzzard along the whole route !!!!
