A nice way to end the month with a Audouin's Gull found on the coast, with a Yellow-legged Gull for company ! Otherwise it was a very quiet day again. With the storms abating we expected more migrants but none were around, except for a single Tawny Pipit on the beach.

29th September

Weather.... 0830hrs ....20.0C...Cloud 90%....Vis 20 miles....Wind NW 9-18 m/s.... Sea,very rough.... 1022mb.

Force 8 Beaufort winds greet us this morning, but the cloud cleared a little latter and it was mostly sunny.

We had great views of local raptors most of the morning with griffons coming close and level with us. Ravens giving great displays of their flying skills in high winds and Eleonora's also coming in close some with full crops , they look to be feeding up well, they will soon set off on their journey south. Little else showed !

An afternoon walk along the beach road where heavy seas broke high up the sands provided views of herons and egrets, all were looking for somewhere to rest up , their usual rocks were constantly awash, so they settled closer to the road and were constantly put up by passers by.

Weather.... 0900hrs ....25.2C...Cloud 90%....Vis 20 miles....Wind W 5 m/s.... Sea,calm.... 1015mb. Storms threatened all day a thunderstorm out to sea at 1300hrs.

A few birds arrived on the front of a storm this lunchtime, most of the raptors passed by just offshore, both Marsh Harrier and Honey Buzzard. Sparrowhawks came over the hills.

A group of Grey Heron managed to pass the day resting undisturbed on rocks near Viglia. A small group of Little Egret was spotted battling their way across the bay toward Kissamos , they came under attack from an Eleonora's Falcon and split into two groups , one bird crashed into the sea with three others immediately turning to support it, they flew around until it lifted back into the air and this smaller group of four then returned to the other ten birds.

20th September

Weather.... 0800hrs ....22.7C...Cloud 20%....Vis 20 miles....Wind N 6 m/s.... Sea,calm.... 1020mb.

A slow morning , shepherds in the hills along with a few rabbit hunters , it was very quiet apart from several gun shots. We noticed after one of the shepherds had gone that a number of Raven descended , a short while later Griffon vultures appeared and started to land .

Two hunters came down and said there were twelve and they were feeding on a goat , we decided to go up a bit nearer as the birds were not to put out by the people that were up there. We got halfway there and decided that was near enough and enjoyed great views as we got under the cover of some rocks , several griffons came and went.

When all the ravens took off as one we thought other hunters were coming along , but moments later they flew over the carcass ushering a juvenile Golden Eagle along, only moments but superb views ! Everything had now flown off and we waited before going higher to see the area where they were feeding. After a slow approach and no birds coming near we found the carcass, there was not much left but enough for some birds to get more food so we left . A nice find was a griffon feather, I think a P8 it was just under 60cms

We got 22 species for the day.

Another really quiet day , so quiet as we sat out early morning , there was no bird song and even the cicadas have at long last shut up.

Much too quiet that we only managed 13 species and decided to have a walk to Viglia and have a break from watching the empty skies. It turned out to be a good idea as we found a Sanderling , well nearly trod on it ! suddenly looking down, it was at our feet and we spent some time in its company.                                                    A lucky find, on our return it had gone, we also spotted the Ruddy Turnstone but that was distant and 3 Grey Heron flew along the coast looking for somewhere to take a break on their migration. We also disturbed a Hoopoe as we walked along the dirt road to the beach, it was feeding alongside the road and waited until we were upon it to fly up and away.

We had some business to attend to this morning so birding was curtailed for a while.

We arrived back in time to see several birds soaring very high at around 1300hrs, they disappointingly turned out to be 7 Raven !!! a short while later we were rewarded with several species of raptor. A Spotted and Lesser Spotted Eagle within an hour of each other a possible Lesser Kestrel and Levant Sparrowhawk but they were so high it was hard to classify them as such. Peregrine and Eleonora's Falcon were up there too, all much to high to  see properly.

A possible twenty nine species today and hard work to find them.

Also three Peregrine falcon through this morning , taking time out to give us an aerial display as they dove on each other and took on a local Raven and Kestrel  (photos on Facebook)

Another group of c70 duck sp on the bay but distant and again not identified, I need a boat !!.

Our resident Bonelli's Eagles were up there too this morning, the pair joining up with four Griffon Vultures (again photos on Facebook)

Today we had a nice find at our local beach. On the 10th August we found adult turtle tracks , six trails leading up and of course six back to the sea. Some looked fairly fresh with no disturbance to them. Today we found trails from three of these sites of the baby turtles. Its hard to say how many but maybe 100+ went off to the sea last night. The thing is its only 34 days since we spotted the adult trails and we think there must have been adults laying for a few weeks before this as incubation can take around 80 days. Tomorrow we have a walk down to check for more trails.

A link to Archelon with lots of interesting info.  http://www.archelon.gr/index_eng.php

Birding wise another quiet day. it started off pretty promising with c70 Squacco Heron seen flying along the coast , later they split and a single group of 33 stayed fairly local. Late afternoon a couple of marsh harrier came past along with a pale morph Booted eagle that did not get a chance to linger , being chased off by the whole of our local hooded crow population 23 birds !!!

Yesterday on Antikythira they had a juv Egyptian Vulture pass through we kept a look out for it in case it passed our way but we only saw a group of 15 Griffon vulture high on the peninsula.

An Osprey was reported fishing at Agyia today, hopefully one of our locals was there to photograph it !

We thought we would get out and up into the mountains today, you an only take so much sea air !! with the species seen at the house included we spotted 45 species through the day.

Notable were the two Golden Eagles , many Golden Oriole near Deres and high  over the wind turbines on the Sougia road, many hirundines and Bee-eater. The weather changed on us at around 3pm with low cloud,  rain and thunder and we headed back to Kaliviani. All that fresh mountain air made us light headed and we gave Agyia a miss.

We headed along the coast road where we spotted ....Little Ringed Plover...  Kingfisher ....Collared Dove and Yellow-legged Gull.

A flock of Bee-eater was heard but not seen as they passed high overhead.

A brilliant day for raptor migration today with harriers , eagles, falcons and an osprey passing over. I have put two harriers as Monti's as I could not decide which they were, pallid or montagu's, I think the pallids come through a little later .

A small natural spring has restarted after the recent rain and is a good place early morning to watch for small migrants, Subalpine Warbler, Goldfinch, Whinchat and whitethroat  were the visitors this morning.

A poor day today, with winds from the west we did not get any raptors moving through. We did have a nice group of 50+ Bee-eater pass overhead , other groups are reported from several other locations and some birds are  lingering  instead of the usual autumn fly throughs.

A single Bee-eater is staying around this evening ....

Nikos finds at Aygia.... Lapwing, Little Stint, Snipe, Kingfisher, Eleonora's Falcon, Little Ringed Plover, Wood Sandpipers,... and five species of herons, glossy ibis, Stork, Peregrine Falcon.

Other reports, good numbers of Spotted Flycatcher  all over the island , along with Wryneck ( but not in kaliviani area  !!!) and Bee-eaters at Fres.

A very quiet day for raptor migration , winds north of Crete are blowing strong westerlies I believe.

Today we were supposed to head into the mountains with Nikos, unfortunately  sciatica took hold yesterday and sitting being a problem we ended up staying local. Hopefully Nikos had a productive day. Sorry Nikos, soon hopefully !!!

In the Kaliviani area there are many Northern and Black-eared Wheatears, one Hoopoe remains feeding in the same area. Good numbers of spotted Flycatcher also. A small number of migrant raptors came through around 1300hrs, Marsh Harrier and Honey Buzzard, they flew really high and were hard to spot. Noticed the Eleonora's Falcons were also flying very high today   It was nice to be able to find Scopoli's Shearwater amongst the whitecaps in Kissamos Bay, only two spotted though ! Managed a walk into the lower fields to try to get Hoopoe pics, success !!

Due to the time consuming way that photos have to be uploaded onto this site, I am sorry to say that posting of images each day will from today, cease.  Spending all evening with slow internet speeds, editing the images, the host sites  laborious loading of one image at a time is taking its toll and not making it an enjoyable venture.
Images appear on here after much work to them so that valuable space is not taken up in the allowance.                                                                                        So with trying to keep relatively sane, have some quality time with Sue and  some time away from the computer in the evenings all images will now appear on Facebook , where....
 1. I can upload multiple images                                                                                  2. Images look a lot better.                                                                                        3. They are produced larger.                                                                                      4. Space is not limited.                                                                                                  5. Images can be posted virtually as they are taken.

So if you wish to see what we see, Facebook, "Crete Birding" is the place to be ! For those who do not want to go on Facebook I can only apologise and say , that birding is a hobby as is our photography.
We started the site to share details of the birds we see daily, either from our locality, when we are here, or our trips around Crete and do not want to stop doing that, so the site will now be as it started out with reports only, but images and more on Facebook, as others post their sightings and images there also. Whichever way you follow us, thankyou .....

Today at Meridiana near Kissamos a Roller was sighted and photographed by Nikos first reported by Phillipa ( image on Facebook !!! )

Here at Kaliviani 12 Little Egrets flew up and down the bay before disappearing north along the coast the Griffon Vultures are still in the area after three intense days of feeding.
Twenty three individuals flew fairly close and some landed a bit further away than the previous days, still very nice views and close up watching their flying skills and the antics of the ravens that mobbed them. Our first autumn Woodlarks, heard first then seen briefly.
We were expectant of the Bearded Vulture returning and were out at 6am watching, but no sign all day.
Nikos joined us in the afternoon after his detour to see the Roller and things got even quieter with the vultures and ravens departing for their evening roosts.
